Born at a strange time for her parents, Elhaym was originally going to
be abandoned to the forest animals because of a family too large to accommodate
her. Thankfully for her, however, there happened to be a
traveling cleric in the area that agreed to take her, rather than see such
a pretty baby abandoned to the forest.
The traveling cleric got the two of them on board a ship that was bound
for Noctura, intending to find a suitable home for the baby somewhere in
the city of Camille, or perhaps to apprentice her to someone at Nocturne
Castle. As the ship was passing through the complicated coral reefs, it
ran afoul of pirates.
The pirate ship ran the ship into the reef, and when the crew still
would not surrender, they set fire to the ship. The cleric, thinking
quickly that even navigating the dangerous waters would be a better fate
for the two of them than to face the pirates that were boarding. And so
the cleric dove into the water, and swam his hardest to make it to the
nearby shore that he could make out. Luck was with him, and the tide
helped to carry the cleric, and his infant charge, up onto the beach.
Through luck of the gods, or sheer blindness from the attack on the
boat, the cleric swam through the flower petal islands of the Southern
Islands, straight to the beach patrolled by the protectors of the
Daughters of Light. The Swordsmen of the White Seal that were assigned to
the guard the beach that day drew swords and rushed forward, but there was
no cause to attack the cleric for trespassing on the island. A wound
sustained when the ship crashed, that had bled throughout his swim from
the ship.
The Swordsmen would have missed the infant, if one of them had not
decided to kick the cleric over to get a good look at his face before
tossing him back out to sea. The tiny baby stared up at them, and one
Swordsman lifted his sword, but the cleric, who recognized the markings on
their armor, managed to gurgle out that she shouldn't be harmed.
Instead of killing the drenched, violet-eyed baby, the Captain of the
Shore Guard picked the child up and carried it into the Shrine of the
White Seal, where she was brought up in the traditions of the Daughters.
A good student, and a proficient priestess up until she traveled to the
capital in Negocia for her dedication rites. The pain of the white rune
tattoos that were embedded into her flesh fresh in her mind and body, she
ambled quietly behind the Swordsman of the White Seal that had been sent
to guide her as she made her way to the capital to be dedicated. But once
on Negocia, her path was crossed, rudely, by peasants.
The Swordsman demanded an apology and the proper respect for her, and
she was too numbed by pain to quite realize what was going on. The
Swordsman got no apology, and grew angered. A young brother to the order,
he was still of a temper to be rash, and he slew the peasants that had
disrespected her.
Shocked and appalled by his treatment of people, Elhaym stared at her
white-armored, blood stained Swordsman, and found that she had no words
for him. She had heard, peripherally, of such things happening occasionally. No punishment was ever offered up. But she had somehow not
thought she would ever be witness to such cruelty.
With nothing to be done about such oversight in humanity towards
others, Elhaym turned her smaller pony in the opposite direction that the
two of them were headed, and left the Swordsman. She decided that there
must be a better way to live than the one offered by the Order she had
been raised in, and so she put her clerical skills and all that she
learned living in the privilege of the Order to the back of her mind, and
focused on what more mundane arts she had learned over the years. She
covered the white tattooed rune markings with gloves and a sturdy pair of
boots and went off in search of something more outstanding than what she
knew.
